Des Oiseaux - Rinko Kawauchi
This photo series by Rinko Kawauchi is the tenth title in the Des Oiseaux (On Birds) collection which celebrates the presence of birds though the vision of different international photographers.
The Japanese photographer began shooting for the collection in April 2020, turning her lens on a nest of swallows found near her home during birthing season. Kawauchi focuses particularly on the tiny nests that the birds build away from prying eyes in window openings or in the underside of roofs, in order to protect their young. Fascinated by this spectacle, with her characteristic poetry and sense of detail, Kawauchi reveals the magic of our daily life and the ephemeral beauty of suspended moments.
Accompanying these photographs is an essay by ornithologist Guilhem Lesaffre which provides rich insight into the life cycles and habits of the swallow.
