This fascinating publication accompanies the exhibition Frank Bowling: Land of Many Waters, opening at Arnolfini, summer 2021, which covers the last decade of the pioneering painter’s practice.

The book reflects back further on Bowling’s long career with artist, curator and art historian Eddie Chambers revisiting the landmark touring exhibition Frank Bowling: Bowling on Through the Century (1996) 25 years on; whilst Bowling’s New York studio manager, friend and assistant Spencer Richards, shares an intimate insight into the sights and sounds of the artist’s studio. Curator of Tate’s standout Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power (2017) exhibition and author of Meet the Artist: Frank Bowling, Zoé Whitley draws out memories from Bowling’s student days in Bristol and London to explore the ‘thingness’ of Bowling’s paintings; whilst fellow artist Mark Bradford discusses Bowling’s considerable influence on a younger generation, and making connections between past and present, Bowling’s son Ben and grandson Frederik (both now regular ‘helpers’ in the studio) look through the artist’s soon to be catalogued archive with a selection of items animated by an inter-generational conversation.
